SENSATIONALISM

When a person risks sensationalism for the sake of attention they take one step further away from reality.

Sense perceptions are highs and lows, when dealing with us interesting humans; the emotive quotient can be amusing or enlightening.

Do not get captured by the amusing entertainers.

Sensationalism has been exposed as fake news, it drives opinion with alerts, red flags, cautions and adversaries. Rarely does it extend an olive branch to glowing truth.

It is a reduction of professional efforts to process meaningless responses that degrade health and safety. It creates a perception of approval based on a distinction of false attributes that go against behavioral competence.

What can we do about sensationalism? We can ask effective questions.

How can we challenge the response? Open up your Owner’s Manual. Resist the temptation to downgrade safety. Conduct proper research, study, read, learn.

If the news in social media is often shocking, what value is it to be shocked? Being informed should not be confused with theatrics.

We see this in the selection of agency images. How many times have we witnessed a public safety agency displaying a Rescue Water Craft with their crew airborne jumping waves or wakes? Or not wearing an approved lifejacket? Or not using the engine cut off switch?

An entire industry of public safety images was built around sensationalism of an RWC. But why? Who allowed this? Why was it never challenged by the peers or associations? Why did they concede?

When was the last time you saw a fire truck engine going into an traffic intersection with a forced slide for effect? Probably never. But an RWC? Totally acceptable.

These people who conducted these missives and approved it should be removed from the program, period.

Image searches and video shorts are controlled by a cult like mentality that misbehaving as a mariner is a true mark of watermanship. Stop it.

Seduction is a hostage situation. Be careful what you post and ask yourself what meaning are you actively selecting to convey.
Does it look safe? Is it reinforcing manufacturer recommendations? Does it defend a standard of care?

Many agencies have held themselves hostage to mediocrity and damaged the reputation and image of the Rescue Water Craft community and its associated products.

Just stop it already. Stop.

Consequently, Rescue Water Craft - boat mishaps (wipeouts) are not considered competency, they are reminders of improper conduct and the need for training support.

Recurring accidents are invitations of death and negligence. Their liability is wrongfully consumed by the entire community, especially regarding insurance and lawsuits. It is far more cost effective to engage proper training and qualification.

We don’t need negative infusion in a longstanding maritime community. It may be a new tool for an agency, but we have been around for 40+ years.

Our RWC culture needs a champion and we aim to represent, please join us.

Sensationalism
The use of sensational matter or methods, especially in writing, journalism, or politics. The use of media to engage the senses for ‘click bait’ or noticeability in a competitive digital world.

OBSERVATION

BY THE BOOK

How you observe the equipment in your care, persons, water and weather is your agreement with purpose and efficiency. It is a commitment.

Will you fulfill your purpose successfully in these actions?

Will you deny efficiency or lend permission to flow or disaster?

The state of how you decide to put your equipment and team into motion is a direct relationship to value.

This value has associated risks. We do enjoy labeling them and issuing codes and associated numbers. To reduce these risks, training, conversation and corrections are required, if not demanded.

How is this liability enforced;
by accident review?
by annual inspections?

Changing phases of implementation is a determination of your mindset, how you think, what you know or what you do not know, what you incorporate and what you reject.

Then the resulting behaviors engage arrive. Are they fortuitous or a train wreck? And were you the person who was driving that train?

How far have you worked on developing or accepting your intuition? What is your knowledge level on physical attributes? How much have you studied regarding atmospheric pressures and their resulting influences? What do you know regarding the flux of water and the qualities of speed?

The most important question is your equipment. As I have observed in training hundreds of agencies, the relationship of gear and safety has not always been thorough enough. It’s usually good enough to get by until a breakdown occurs, and they always do.

Rescue Water Craft aka power craft require a tremendous amount of select attention with an hourly schedule that correlates to the ‘book’. AKA the owner’s/shop manuals.

96% of my clients do not even have the proper tools and supplies required to be reliant. It’s a failure and it continues due to associations, assigned program leaders and human entanglements. We need strong men and women to break this distracted cycle.
Will you be one of them to risk it?

It’s like a bad inheritance of damaged DNA that creates an incomplete process of optimal functions.
This will result into the collapse, it’s a signature of our community that is protected far more than it is rejected.
The failure to reach out to persons who are subject matter experts, rather than self-appointed gurus who don’t have 100 oil changes under their gloves, is a telling point of failure. It’s a distraction of time, endurance and utility.

Be sure you don’t frame out your road map to end up in a dead end with the water rising and the equipment has stopped running.

Get into the books.

Remember, you are on your own, act like it. Think about that for a while.

THE TIME IS NOW

EXPANSION

Your skills are reflections of your goals.

These are the values of your time that you invested in your functional actions. You cannot pretend that you are doing this. Why?

Nature will teach you where you lack. And it will be swift and probably painful.

You can expand your functions because you study, you put into practice your learning, you put effort into this because it’s a realistic goal.

But you need to adjust your goals with your reality. And with reality itself. Or you will be a victim.

The challenge is to be functional in the goal because the demand of your skill and service will put your life in the lineup of death.

You can succeed if you map out your strategy. How do you do this?

Research.

Map out what is needed. Don’t copy bad imitators, they can pretend, but in reality they may be dragging you down into an abyss that makes you useless and wastes your time.

Question and evaluate. Repeat this until your skill level matches success. If you put your learning goal in a low level ‘get by’ attitude, you will achieve that rapidly. It’s a really tough place to put yourself. Don’t do it. There are painful implications that come with that choice.

Learn to ask appropriate questions. Ones that have value and future potential.

Take good care of yourself.

This is the way of the safety warrior.

Right Risk

It all lines up with your selection.

You want to choose the lesser of the risk that you deduct from your learning and experience.

If your intuitive is speaking to you ‘not a good idea’, and you start to question yourself, perhaps that inner red flag is warning you that you have not developed the skills or the resilience to take on the mountain in from of you that is moving, fluid and steady on its course.

Are you steady to stand up to it even with fear?

You may have to move forward into that and prevail against your internal encouragement to stand down and you will have to live with your choice(s).

If you stand down, you may not have the brave moment to transcend the learning that comes from experience.
It is called a ‘rite of passage’. The safety culture will rest on standards, rules and regulations, sometimes nature is not on that team, doesn’t play by those rules and has its own game. The defensive position is a strong argument, and the offensive sometimes is the creative stroke.

Regardless, the best path forward is the spiritual internal conscious making peace with the reality of risk, which is the real world. The unfolding tragedy you are about to engage by volition.

Perception of Safety Reality

Safety means danger, and that means rules are in place to manage the human component to lend towards reduction of human errors.
These errors have a long list of potential mishaps looming if any pattern in the reasonable behaviors is ignored, and how often they are until a cumulative pattern emerges.

The common visual reference is ‘one link in a length of chain’, these links need to be dependent upon one another for strength, or not.

If one team member has a question and is unsure of the next stage, step, pattern or behavior, listen to them. They may become the safety link with their inquiry. Even if your ego is pricked; listen.

It’s time to slow things down for the team at the point of identifiable error and review the entire group and possibly equipment status to determine the validity of an appropriate and supporting answer if none were forthcoming.

This is a good position to review the mission and ethics of the team participants.

Selection is the determination of actions. Whatever we choose, we have to live with it, defend it and define it.

If we are teaching, we are responsible for the manner in which the information is shared and our role is to encourage the recipient to continue to work towards retention of the knowledge and its patterns.

Stubborn beliefs and strong opinions regarding the right and wrong way to do this and that, can be a big contrast from.

Each accident or near miss is a new opportunity to grow a stronger and safer program.

RWC CENTERED LOADING TO TRAILER

SECURING YOUR RESCUE WATER CRAFT TO THE TRAILER

Proper Rescue Water Craft loading onto the trailer is dependent upon a few contributing factors.

We will take a look at suggestions you could use to help your RWC and trailer tie-downs.

In our K38 courses we are teaching the repetitive responsibilities from maintenance, to trailering to operations. There is a lot to learn!

This is specifically related to boat ramp launches.

Tidal considerations change the elevation of the placement of the trailer, don’t place too much of the trailer bunkers completely submerged.

Leave the forward leading edges of the guide bunks exposed.

The more float you have on the RWC the more obverse the angle will be for affixing the bow trailer tie down.

If you are using a hand winch from the trailer to the Rescue Water Craft bow eye, do not lose tension on the handle. If you fail to abide by the safety practices under load you can hurt yourself.

The winch handle will snap back under tension and strike your head or your forearm. Make sure you have a firm hand grip and align your body appropriately so you do not create an injury.

If this tie down or hand winch line is too taught, the bow will be in good position, however the stern of the craft(s) will be risen.

Make sure you are in a flat and level location and not on the boat ramp itself to correct this. This can lead to loss/damage of craft or injury.

Ensure that you have a stern safety strap in place if any incline. Do not disconnect the trailer from the tow vehicle.

This causes stress on the bow eye cleat.

Can damage the trailer tie down.

May lead to injury if hands and body position are not in a safe position from the release of the physical load back onto the trailer.

Do not lose the bow connector point with a fixed metal X hook or closure.

Make sure your Rescue Water Craft is properly loaded and centered on the bunks.

You should not have the stern of the Rescue Water Craft sticking out from the back of the trailer, it should end at the last part of the trailer in perfect alignment.

You may have to push the Rescue Water Craft forward if the RWC slides back.

WATCH YOUR TRAILER ANGLE
When learning it is easy to forget the patterns in the sequence, that is quite normal. Repetition and a ‘walk around’ the trailer will clue you into what you missed.

So, lets go over it again:

1. Observe the angle of the floating Rescue Water Craft to the angle of the Trailer.
2. When you secure on a steep angle remember the RWC will slide back slightly when you pull forward when using a tie down strap. Most trailers have hand winches, but not all.
3. Pull up off the boat ramp and inspect the Rescue Water Craft to ensure it is level. If it is not, reset the bow tie strap.
4. Make sure your Rescue Water Craft is centered on the trailer bunks and not overhanging off the stern of the trailer. It should be aligned properly.

Certainly, you can add additional steps and corrections to this as you see fit. Not all trailers, winches, Rescue Water Craft and tie downs are the same.

You will have to interpret according to you own equipment and location for loading the necessary patterns.

The more you practice this, like all things in your RWC program, the better you will get.

Make sure your entire team knows about the ‘walk around’. At first learning is a bit of an overload because your mind is focusing. Over time you adapt and it becomes a normal behavior.

The more you practice, the better your mind relates to safety.

Remember: Safety is a Behavior.

We Don’t Give Medals for Mishaps

Accidents are not opportunities to draw praise, but an opportunity to correct and amend.

Mishaps are not for issuing medals and congratulations.

They are a great opportunity to make corrections from the current negligence and prevent death in the future of your team or those you are serving.

This is a serious reprimand for everyone who praises a mishap and encourages Coxswains or Crew to fail.

Why would you want your fellow sister or brother in the RWC world to fail, get hurt, or die?

Think about it.

Modify your own behavior and do not become corrupt. It’s easy to do when people are attracted to crashes.

Fear a mishap so you can learn to respect life itself and to support the mission and goals of boating safety.

Admit mistakes, make corrections before its too late.

Admit the problems, if you don’t know you have any, get your training assessed by an outside SME

1. Research solutions and corrections, find a mentor

2. Test the methods, observe the results

3. Determine the results of change from start to finish.

Do this now, not later.

Our maritime community is a collective internationally of those who practice safe boating and enforce it.

Otherwise, they are not part of the Maritime community.

Remember to fear an accident, you must respect it.
