ACCIDENT BY SEDUCTION

HIGHER VISION

Seduction by accident has a root cause. Did it begin in training? Are the instructors knowledgeable and updated? Is the content delivered accurate? How would you know?

DO NOT allow a poor instructor to lead you to an accident. Do not endorse them and build their measures up, instead use due caution. It’s your life and others. Do not endorse dysfunction and all its variable levels.

DO endorse an instructor that cares about your professional development. Share their posts and insights. Support their training. Be vocal about their protection of reputation.

There is a hierarchy in place that is either positive or negative, you could call this good or evil. You choose which one you support and build.

Courage builds essential trust in the maritime community. Most folks attach themselves to the naivety of a damaging path and will do anything to protect it. Cynicism would serve you better, and then to move one step forward, have courage!

In courage you can reveal the betrayals extended in training. Here you can remedy the pitfalls and dangerous behaviors and stop putting your hand out to a biting dog.

RICH MAN POOR MAN

You can establish professionalism yourself by first taking control of your knowledge base and declining those who would undermine your trust in water safety.

Those who betray our water safety trust, the fundamental standard of safety that is often violated and undermines your reputation as well as the community; you have the responsibility to defend this.

The power of persuasion can be positive or negative.

You determine these results by volition and ultimately are the responsible "receiving' party for the negative or positive truths of response and team safety.

If you endorse something, you need to proceed with caution until all methods are tested and with accurate insights, not brand favoritism or ego.

And that ego……….oh yes.. that is where the trouble begins.

SCULPTURE TRUTH BY INVESTIGATION

All of you who are newer water rescue responders can change a negative culture of complacency if it exists in your association or agency - into a modern pursuit of excellence.

Give your training programs and equipment awareness Hell!

Bring people in your team up by associated methods of identification of the wrong that is in your program so you can unblock progress.

Keep your team engaged, invite their criticisms and suggestions. Listen to their advice and challenge it until you find the answers.

Usually those answers are not held within your associations and culture, do not be afraid to move outside your inner circle.

Park the ego and learn how to explore truth beyond the comfort of established programs. They may be severely outdated.

Safety is a Behavior, not an excuse.

YOU CAN FAKE IT TILL YOU BREAK IT

You can fake it till you break it.

Then you have to fix it.

Did you set aside a budget incentive for future damages or loss?

If not, do it now!

DO IT

We do not learn from lessons learned.

We continually repeat the same behaviors that got us into trouble to start with.

Its not hard to ignore the warning signs, signals and to generally evade.

In fact is may actually be a part of our humanity.. therefore even more important to pay attention and be worried if you are too comfortable.

Go back in recent and distant time and look at the program hurdles.

Are they back on the track right now and do you need to conduct some clearing?

SUCCESS

Yeah, its a pain in the ass to review.

Yeah, its time.

Yeah, its not sexy and there is not action that feeds our need...yeah. YUP!

But do it, just go and do it. Do it now.

Achieve success by denying the lessons learned but ignored.

If you budget means anything to you, respect what is happening with the program and manage it.

Get your gloves on and go to work!

Only good things lie ahead!

MAYBE YOU ARE NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH

Maybe you are not trying hard enough? Effort needs evaluation. Evaluation needs honesty.

Have you put together your operational metrics?

Do you know what goals you need to achieve? How are you going to sustain those and translate them into operational maintenance? Well one way is to try harder but in another direction, such as maintenance review of your Rescue Water Craft program.

Perhaps you may need to review your vetting process for team members? Can you conduct remedial updates for the vetting process and items needed to ensure safety of personnel and competency? Yes you can and you should!

RETURNS NOT DEFICITS

Returns not deficits mean your program is healthy.

This means your management process is functional. But if it isn't and you need to take on remedial action, its not difficult to increase your capability.

The good news is you can do this anytime but its preferable to have an annual review process in place.

REVIEW

Editing program management needs to be an annual process that begins in the last month of the year. You can easily construct a review program by looking at all your response records and any mishaps that occurred during that time or recurring mechanical issues with your Rescue Water Craft.

One area that you can make improvements on is your skills assessment.

If you do not have an update to this in the past year here are some suggestions for your consideration. Pick one simple repetitive behavior you rely upon and break it down into a skillset for qualification updates.

Trailering and On-Water Performance

Most damage that happens to a Rescue Water Craft is from poor trailering habits. Don't allow your Coxswains to turn off the Rescue Water Craft ignition before the Rescue Water Craft bow touches the trailer bunk runners.

Failure to do so will permit the Rescue Water Craft to drift off target and strike either the metal rails or bend the bunk runners. The Rescue Water Craft needs to maintain its forward movement onto the trailer bunks until the centered hull loads up onto the bunks.

It is incorrect to use thrust that would disrupt the surrounding water area with reverse use due to how the fluid dynamics are distributed this could disrupt other such as at a boat launch, create unnecessary boat handling and or off center from over correction.

Practice
Trailering -backing up, launching RWC's, loading RWC's, tie downs to RWC/Trailer (5 checked off in a row with remedial corrections and notations on skill checklist per team member.

Ensure that your team members know how to use the trailer tie downs and that they understand a soft approach to the helm/throttle management in confined areas of use.

Emphasize the depth of water to protect the water jet pump.

Make sure that the bow of the Rescue Water Craft is secure on the trailer before launching and hauling out of the water.

Each rotation have them conduct a pre-check on the boat ramp with the bilge plugs properly inserted each time. Too many Coxswains are unfamiliar with their craft features and oftentimes over tighten the bilge plugs.

This is a good example of one skillset. You can create as many as are needed and unique to your area of operation and the make model and year of your craft.
