Perception of Safety Reality

Safety means danger, and that means rules are in place to manage the human component to lend towards reduction of human errors.
These errors have a long list of potential mishaps looming if any pattern in the reasonable behaviors is ignored, and how often they are until a cumulative pattern emerges.

The common visual reference is ‘one link in a length of chain’, these links need to be dependent upon one another for strength, or not.

If one team member has a question and is unsure of the next stage, step, pattern or behavior, listen to them. They may become the safety link with their inquiry. Even if your ego is pricked; listen.

It’s time to slow things down for the team at the point of identifiable error and review the entire group and possibly equipment status to determine the validity of an appropriate and supporting answer if none were forthcoming.

This is a good position to review the mission and ethics of the team participants.

Selection is the determination of actions. Whatever we choose, we have to live with it, defend it and define it.

If we are teaching, we are responsible for the manner in which the information is shared and our role is to encourage the recipient to continue to work towards retention of the knowledge and its patterns.

Stubborn beliefs and strong opinions regarding the right and wrong way to do this and that, can be a big contrast from.

Each accident or near miss is a new opportunity to grow a stronger and safer program.

CHOICES

We are imperfect in our power, drama and expectations. It is possible to control and navigate specific behaviors and expectations based on leadership and team principles. This is a mutable relationship built upon trust and enforcement.

This trust is dependent upon expected exchanges agreed upon by determined rules and regulations. Trust on the racetrack is also lifesaving and sportsmanlike conduct for competitor, staff and spectator.

These relationships are specific between several entities, associate governing bodies and staff members, sponsors, competitors and their supporting teams, regional and national pride, culture, boating rules and regulations, maturity, spiritual presence, equipment compliance, physical ability, sanctioned rule books and expectations.

This is a complicated blend of human directives.

Racing has a distinct pattern to it. Racing is a game. In the game there are rules, actions, weather and water conditions, human interaction, equipment demands and dialogue. In this game there are liabilities, and risks. This game holds disappointments, tragedy, success, ambition, fulfillment and enforcement.

Facts are important because they decipher truth. It takes an interview process based on facts and where those facts are derived from and how they are interpreted to arrive at plausible conclusions. The truth must be accepted. Otherwise corruption is given allowance.

A person can have all the answer that are appropriate in the room, but if the audience denies the answers, then the neglect will continue to operate with poor results the audience demands.

Race preparation is an extensive process. It is costly and bears aspirations from both staff and participants. The demands are vast and complicated, when fatigue is an admixture a lot of volatile patterns can evolve, some are in the imagination and some are concrete fact.

The content that evolves and is transmitted for racing is complicated. It requires study, proper training, vetting and education.

Fundamental understandings and expectations may be in conflict. To move forward as a competent race community, we face a myriad level of chaotic events, and structures that are based in factual domains.

There are many people serving towards the goal of a podium finish. Only a select few individuals will attain the elevation of a Championship attempt let alone bear the #1 plate.

On Friday, the IJSBA Awards for Amateur Ski Lites were to be gifted their trophies. These competitors raced on the previous Wednesday, which means they wait an additional 2 days for their awards ceremony.

They were not called to the stand up on the podium in front of their race peers to receive their due recognition for World Championship earned placings. After waiting through the entire awards program for their class to be called up. How could this happen? We have to perceive a lot of contributing causes and reactions.

The awards announcer and responsible staff for the awards did a poor job reflecting sincerity regarding the lack of accountability and a deserved explanation and public apology from complaints received. They may not have been aware of the situation regarding the trophies.

This could be due to multiple factors, such as staffing issues, fatigue, it could have been a communication error, or the chain of command may have failed. Trophies were stated to have been stolen after the Awards were completed.

However, once the alarm was raised by the competitors themselves emergency actions could have taken place at that time to make amends and modify some solution for petition of error or acknowledgement. Who would be responsible for this action?

Staffing hierarchy structure would need to be clearly outlined with operational guidelines to ensure program success.

Along with the Amateur Ski Lites Champions, likewise the Pro Runabout 1100 Stock Class Champions did not receive their trophies.

This is intolerable at a World Championship event from what appears to be incompetence in managing an awards program in hindsight. Staff needs to make admission on this and not cower in ego defense. Admit the wrongs, identify the issues and fix them, now.

PREPARATION IS EXPENSE

There are also Technical Inspection calls that are in dispute. My question to staff is how familiar are you with the 2019 IJSBA Rule book and the interpretation of those rules? Who mentored you and signed you off after a vetting process? How were you tested and what evaluations occurred? What are your qualifications?

I also extend this responsible accountability to the competitors. Many who do not have English skills and staff has limited international language skills, do you understand the rules and the spirit of the rules? Did you experience frustration in understand and comprehension of rules or expressing them to others?

When we look at a problem you must also look at ourselves to find the answer. Communication is the best place to start.

Interpretations must be fact based. This begins with the Technical Inspection crew and Race Director along with Scoring or Registration (if that applies). It relies on the documents and inspection lists that are filled out for each entry. This is also a responsibility of those in Staging to be looking for any infractions as the race vessels come to the line. How is this noted and conducted if at all?

It is also a responsibility of the racer themselves, and their teammates to understand and ask effective questions far in advance if they are not understanding a specific issue.

This also means that the IJSBA needs a dedicated staff member who is highly trained in human relations communications (able to handle stressful situations and communicate with compassion and stand grand when needed) to be accessible on the race site from start to finish with language skills. This person needs an iPad to document each question and answer and load it into a database for access. This can support evidence based appeal processing. This iPad can also assist in language translations as needed.

However, in the IJSBA defense there may be secondary issues not exposed here that should be taken into consideration. This is the only way to gain understanding and equitable solutions. Blame is easy to project, solutions are what people step away from, because its uncomfortable to be held responsible, it requires time and effort.

We do not have the full story, only the expressions of competitors who did not receive the benefits of their efforts. There was a press release from the IJSBA stating that trophies were stolen and misappropriated, this could explain a lot, however the racers whose trophies were stolen should have been contacted as soon as this came to light individually. People understand hardship, they can deal with it.

Staff and Management need to be educated on the protocols and procedures of problems that may occur from unforeseen circumstances and have what is called an ‘action plan’ or what others would simply say ‘damage control’. Sincere apologies go a long way.
People can handle the truth, but not to be dismissed.

Here is a Pro Tip for the IJSBA staff and other venues: I propose a meeting, take notes, race stakeholders’ public comments, structure the complaints and the timeline of problems faced at the venue. Evaluate the issues that took place with fearless courage. Issue public apologies. Ensure these athletes, their teams and their sponsors are given a platform for recognition after the fact for their earned efforts.

Secondly; IJSBA needs to responsibly train staff members to a higher level of functionality with organizational solutions for secondary controls. Staff members need to be vetted, tested, evaluated and assessed. Some people may not be the right fit for this job and they have to go away. Their Character and principles may not align with altruistic work. Others deserve more support and encouragement.

These people deserve a stronger leadership platform to assist them in the safe and competent production of a legacy event.

Perhaps it will take novice and seasoned IJSBA staff will take this into consideration and care about their constituents they represent with a higher level of professionalism. It would be helpful if staff would remember these simple pressures that people are placed under.

There are emotional and physical demands, lack of language translations from staff to teams that lead to frustration and misunderstandings. Many competitors who travel from all over the world, pay high costs throughout the year to compete for qualifying for this event, acquiring equipment, funding, sponsorship and travel demands.

It is demanding for both the supporting staff as it is for the athletes and their teams. There is a lot of emotion, hopes, aspirations and disappointments that are experienced during an event like this. There is the political climate, territorial issues and personality conflicts to navigate.

The IJSBA has disenfranchised many seasoned race event staff personnel and competitors. Some are deserving and some are incompetent rulings.

There may be financial considerations in these changes, personality or management conflicts. Whatever it is, solutions are potential for advancing the mission, vision and goals of Championship race events. It takes both parties to work together, like a marriage it is not about both sides, it is about the sum of the whole.

This problem is not just for Havasu, but worldwide. This has left a great void in mentorship, safety and event flow from crews and leaders. The time is now to address these concerns that have been voiced publicly by participants and former staff for a few years and organize a stakeholder meeting.

In defense of the current and past IJSBA staff, many are not paid high salaries, or they are volunteering their time, taking away from their work, livelihood and families. They sacrifice a lot to be a part of this amazing venue! They work long hours, in adverse conditions, and perhaps only once a year, or at local events, they may not have any training. Some of the rules and manners of racing may be different from where they are coming from in relation to this event.

Staff, you must hear the things you do not want to hear, you may shut down and become adversarial, that is not to your advantage.

Some of you may not be as great as you think you are. This goes the same for competitors. If you want to look at integrity in motorsports it begins with you.

Fearless review and inventory of your mistakes is the only way to grow the sport in unity. It’s not one against the other, it is everyone combined as a community invested in the culture and spirit of a dangerous and stressful motorized power sport. Otherwise carry on with the ‘Clown Down’ and drama, because it will only continue to slide downward with you driving it. It is your reputation you should be concerned about, not ego.

Do not expect affirmation or fame, expect sacrifice, hard work and personal achievement.

There are intolerable personalities who will continue to be a determinant to themselves and the race community by their own contempt and avoidance. There is nothing we can do to support folks such as this, they are unable to evolve.

LAZINESS IS AN ENDING

However, we as a culture can evolve by addressing known problems or recurring problems without ego or spitefulness. It will take effort and that is the problem. Some will inflict politics and strategy into dominance to undermine control. That is and has always been a challenge, but with personalities focused on unity a lot of that can be enforced and subsequently dismissed.

This is a strong justification for staff training and mentorship. Instead of focusing on the negativity, I have addressed concrete issues to solve. You may have others to bring to light. What are the solutions?

I am offering a solution.

If any noble IJSBA staff member who is willing and has the volition to further their competition event management skills, I would like to offer free training, mentorship and guidance to assist you in professionally developing your skill sets. I have the answers.

I also extend this same invitation to any race competitors who are interested in professionally developing their race career. This invitation will stand until the deadline of October 24, 2019 to allow enough time for sincerity in considering the truth of these matters for those who care and are willing to be constructive in resolution.

This is not about ego, company, nation or team bias or political affiliation, it is about competency in race management for both staff and competitors for power sport safety and competence. This commentary is positive in spirit and driven for the purpose of creating solutions and to deny future drama, blaming, shaming and mistrust of a sport that I helped develop along with my colleagues. Stand with us.

I have a strong pedigree in racing events and event management. However, I acknowledge that I have in the past made mistakes and I did make corrective measures after the fact. Today I remain in regret over some of my decisions that had negative effects on others. However, I determined not to make them again which I did not, and to apply myself towards a higher level of dedication to service, safety, accountability and communication towards others.

It is not easy to change, but it is the only way to move forward. Otherwise expect the same results. These are not new issues, they are just growing. In 2012 these same concerns were presented to the race community by myself and others, its now 7 years later and the issues are deteriorating. Many new racers have a sub-par race platform they enjoy today because they have nothing to scale it against. Those of us who are legacy pioneers know the difference.

What I learned about my mistakes was that I was not fully prepared to meet the demands I wanted to manage; I did not receive training because there was no source for such competency.

I had to retrain myself. In owning a mistake, the goal is not to repeat it. Once negligence is established as an awareness it is up to us collectively and individually to alter course. This means we must hear the truth, the hard facts, the mistakes and the full understanding of the situation and its reciprocal effects.

We must admit that these problems may have ancillary options we can understand and should. Ignorance is not an excuse. Safety is a behavior. Racing is not Fair. Staffing cannot rely merely on having a good heart, one must have competence and structure. Racers must come to an event fully prepared.

Not all racers are ready for the race track, they may not belong on a race track and therefore their scrutiny is most important. Do your homework, study, prepare, find a mentor or a coach, don't just show up to the starting line. Show up as a representative that understands the history, rulebook, water and your boat.

There is no value in pointing out problems if a solution is not offered. It is up to us as individuals to decide right now, what kind of a staff or competitor do we want to be? Do you want to be the person in the room or on the racetrack others will be able to depend upon?

The real question here is what are you willing to do to make effective changes? What effort are you willing to exert for solutions?

The past cannot be changed, but the future can be addressed. It begins with you, or it ends with you.

Not All Knowledge is Equal

When we err in our training it is because we are striving to achieve specific learning objectives. This is the reason we all know why we train, we train to achieve.

You must understand how to hunger for the transcendent instead of the status quo, which is a bare minimum effort.

transcendent
a: exceeding usual limits: SURPASSING
b: extending or lying beyond the limits of ordinary experience
c: far better or greater than what is usual

The Latin verb scandere means "to climb", so transcend has the basic meaning of climbing so high that you cross some boundary. *

Your coach aka ‘instructor’ will share with you examples of their best-known practices. That is a starting point.

Prior to training your known realization was sufficient enough to maintain where you ‘where’. But to get to another level of competency you have to park that lower resolution knowledge that worked fine for the duration of operations you sustained.

Then you need to head towards warp speed to acquire higher functioning actions, through the scrutiny of a guide with those skills you desire to apply! Can you guide yourself? Possibly, but you need goals that are structured.

MOVING FORWARD

There is more knowledge than you are aware of. Do you want to acquire it?

If you said yes, then do not be comfortable, remain unreasonable and start asking questions.

1. Get out a piece of paper. Write 5 of your last mishaps.

Detail them out from the start to the finish.

2. Now Write 5 solutions!

Detail those solutions in comparison

This exercise will help you in all things.

TRANSCEND COMFORT

Keep after it, seek knowledge, don’t have a closed ego, use that internal power properly and accordingly. You must strive for the transcendent in your field.

If you think you know it all, then there is not reason to speak to you. Ignorance holds us hostage to progress.
Those who are curious are brave. They see the water rescue world as a continual adjustment of skills and equipment.

Error is our enemy and that resides within us, keep your mind organized on target goals and achieve them. From this you will continue to acquire the rescue mindset of wisdom our ancestors passed on and we ignore.

This is a moral obligation of service for water rescue. Keep moving ahead, when you are comfortable its' time to start learning something new!

SET A NEW LIMIT

CONCEPTUAL SCHEMES OF LEARNING

You've done a lot of difficult things in your Rescue Water Craft career. Have you gotten comfortable? Did you arrive at a level that you set as your baseline or have you driven to another level?

Wherever you last landed, its time to get traction going again. We must continue our education to avoid catastrophe in the field.

Remember, your training is not just about you, its your crew and the survivors, you are working for a lot of people who are depending upon your expertise and mental execution of critical decisions. This means you need to keep honing your skills.

PRUDENT MARINER

We cannot control the weather or the water conditions. However we can control ourselves. When we know where our capabilities last rested, we can appreciate that we are capable of much more!

Do you have a perception or a conceptual idea of what you limit is? Trust me, there is more. Perhaps you are too comfortable and
you haven't taken time to stay updated. There is nothing worse than to close the book and forget what you learned.

Pull out your training notes and review them.
Watch your training videos and look for the useless points of action and signal the highlights of potential.

STRUCTURE OF REALITY

There is so much opportunity in your potential. Don't restrict progress by being comfortable. Remain unreasonable and open up the Owner's Manual or get the Rescue Water Craft splashed and go over your basic fundamentals.

You are not what you could be as a Coxswain. Make a commitment to attain a new ideal, a new level!

Don't fall backwards, get back in the race and put the pedal to the metal and get your knowledge base going again!

SAFETY IN ACCURACY

We pay closer attention to our negative emotions so we need to correct this entitled behavior and protect our water safety values by enforcement of the positive values. If we don't do this, with regard to technology we will surrender in media to an increasingly desperate attention market of a new media order that often does not communicate safe practices.

Who are the gatekeepers of reason? We are, you are.

Sensationalism is the determination to capture viewer engagement:

Where people are seeking the negative rather than the content of theory vs capability. This is problematic for us as an individual and for companies like ours its vital to the marketplace.

We are to progress from a base point, and move ahead and continually adjust and correct any measures determined to change due to technology, accessory and vessel changes.

DETERMINE YOUR SOURCES

We ask our student cadre to question and challenge our training methods and provide obverse evidence. Its healthy for all of us to do this, in fact we demand it.

We should all be skeptical when learning and to continue in skepticism to ensure our methods are valid! This is the narrative we need to determine falsehoods.

Our goal is quality content.

Metadata is manipulated by artificial content used by math and algorithm. Real people may engage in social engagement, but its tough to get into that queue when competing with 'mishaps per view'.

One of the biggest media culprits of this is the big wave safety culture, or lack thereof. Mishap after mishap is pushed as viable operations and we cringe in horror. The corporations backing these athletes during these incidents receive the benefits of manipulation by promoting these near death experiences more than the athletes they are on duty to protect! Their athletic prowess is reduced to a side show instead of the pursuit of big wave surfing, rendering the faulty rescue mishaps as click bait opportunities.

These water safety teams do not realize the manipulation they are under and have not questioned if their repetitive mishaps have solutions. These videos will remain as evidence in future lawsuits of the lack of boating safety knowledge, especially with a storied maritime attorney on behalf of a grieving family.

The content creation is sole source, however you see the re-branding industry to push out auto generated videos for businesses, they manipulate the business to business service for attention economy.

We likewise do not put out our training modules in steps online, we invite people to view snippets of our training narrative to determine if it makes sense?

1. Does the practice appear safe?
2. Does it measure up to response need?
3. Is the craft managed competently?

When we study online videos we look for the same observations. We square them up with the end point of maritime safety and seamanship skills.

Make sure this is your aim. And continually aim high and exceed your status quo of standards.

You can make your individual and collective behaviors an operational goal beyond what you assume is correct.
In fact we encourage your to delve further and put time into your research, if you do not, you reap the rewards or you
may reap a serious mishaps or program failure.

Withstand the destruction by uniting your social footprint with research, you will feel better.

HOLD YOURSELF RESPONSIBLE

The Critical Mass is to determine how to discover real people who need real solutions rather than artificial engagement.
Likes, Views and Followers may not be genuine.

It's difficult to resist the modern change in communication. How do we know we are receiving fact vs. fiction? How do we know if we are learning appropriately? You have to research. You must invest your time in education, not following any leader.

B roll, photos and audio are used to create content for legitimate users. This technology can be cleverly downloaded and altered with the algorithms that red flag under fake email accounts or not and auto created content has the influence to change how people think. This propaganda is coordinated vs authentic.

You can also scrutinize sponsors posts, is it one more mishap they are posting after another? Is it one more PWC drama fest? Where are their competent positive posts? How many posts are accurate and represent our seamanship skills? If not, step away from their carnage and write them a professional letter of correction to cease and desist promoting reckless operations of their sponsored athletes or staff members.

SEAMANSHIP SKILLS

Being a mariner is a thousands year old calling of boat wrecks, capsizing and drownings in our wake.

Seek a mentor or qualified boating safety instructor who realizes ‘that what is fatally flawed in training that they have already discovered’, they can help their students with the limit, until they reach the limit of their instructor.

Safety is a behavior, it is not a word or a phrase. It is an ACTION!

WE ARE BOATERS NOT LIFESAVERS

And hopefully both instructors and Coxswains have the courage to go beyond and continue to modernize the rescue mindset for Rescue Water Craft operations.

Do not be held hostage by a training manual.

Seek the creators of the discipline who are living it, as it if were their life.

We adapt through our training methods and demands because it is not complicated to comprehend the reasons why. Its the probability of patrol, response, search and recovery. It's also a part of that necessary maintenance territory we must endorse 85% of the time. 15% of your operations may be in the field on the water, the rest is program maintenance and recurring training.

We can scale our adaptation to the order of safety.

MARITIME SECURITY

Collectively through mutable experience levels and personnel discussions, we can scale our adaptation to the order of safety.

we can scale this up to the order of how the ocean moves, how the river flows, how the weather bears down in the negative.

How do you know the full extent of your capability?

You train, by repetitive exposure to methods in these elements that bring out your flaws and in isolated actions and exact pieces of evaluation and assessment brings you to a competency level once you reach your training limit.

Keep training, but make sure its effective and you know your equipment and the water. Do not become a potential victim.

Be courageous or open the door to become a statistic.

TIME IS MOTIVATION

Time should motivate you because you cannot get it back once spent.

Time is essential. The Time is NOW!

Your actions have positive meaning.

You have invested a lot of time into your Rescue Water Craft program or you are about to venture on that journey.

Regardless, use your time wisely. Its the same as a rescue mission.

Time is critical to the end result.

Training our nations elite Coxswains requires a dedicated focus on time management and moving the group as one mobile and vicarious asset of good. Time cannot be wasted on ineffective operations that can cost them their life or that of a teammate. The stakes are high and the 'time is now'.

TICK TOCK

Progress is forward movement, its essentially timely management of advantages and staying off the disadvantages.

This means the clock is ticking!

In a rescue we only have mere 'seconds and feet'.

A second of movement at different speeds can be 20 or 60 feet of forward attempts, regress or success and celebration.

Isn't it unnerving to realize that a second in time can mean the difference between life or death or a near miss?

How many times in your career have you shrugged off that near second reality? Its quite humbling to realize that our lives
can come down to moving our range of motion 1" or 1 foot to the left or right and that decisions is life or death!

For me every action is measurable, its an accounting of being in the right place, at the right time and prepared for it.

IDEAS

Ideas of service oriented movements promote effective time management. It seems nobody has enough time and everything is wanted yesterday. This means our time management needs to be effective and not misshapen.

More capability of all our actions is expected to deliver with less, so the finite adaptation of the progression of time use is critical to all of us.

Processes are engaged, equipment addressed, gear purchased all for the goal of future 'time'. For that call out, that rescue or that daily patrol.

Preserve your time management by focusing on the realities of program need, maintaining effective records and keep the team on point with authentic practices that can yield them timely results in their rescue response.

Positive is power and it begins with you.  Respect your ways and you respect your life and those around you.

Positivity cannot be smashed even by the most ardent deniers.

That is what makes you so great! Otherwise you would not be taking your precious time to read this validation you so greatly deserve.

Thank you for caring about your career and the reputation of those around you.

Work, attitude and commitment over the long haul will bring you there.

Maintain your positive attitude, it has served you well up until this point and it will not disappoint your future.

Positive actions create solutions.

Positive attitude creates a calm atmosphere under pressure when a disruption will create additional chaos.

Nobody wants to be around a negative personality, they are distractions from forward progress and need to be deflected.

Even if you are surrounded by doubters and naysers who bully and chide your dedication and focus, don’t assume their problems as your own. Smile back at yourself and carry on.

No matter what comes your way, you are the power of the greater good for the long term results.

The more positive you remain over the endurance of your career, the more benefits others receive. Your actions matter most, more than negativity, it crushes the disaster of that realm with the ‘can do’ attitude of getting things done, doing them right and avoiding collisions or mishaps.

We need more people like you to maintain that watch!

LEARN

The Value of Training is the admission of the necessity for improvement. Training is also a vital extension of preventative maintenance.

If something isn’t quite working out as expected, address it.

This applies to the physical actions of Coxswains as much as it does to the tools they need to administer their program success.

If you have a team mentality that will do things the way they have always been done, maybe its time to inspect that closely. Everything in our world is moving forward, but water rescue has been stagnant in product development or new training updates and that is not good!

Admit where you or your program is wrong or flawed. Don't skirt it, don't ignore it and don't give it an excuse or delay. Fix it, and fix it strong and sure so that you do not suffer a casualty or loss. (or worse).

Making admissions in the errors of program or equipment use is lifesaving, its your life and your teammates. It starts with the most simplest of your tools.

Learning is about review. Its about sustainability and performance measures.

1. Itemize the needs
2. Deduct the problems
3. Fulfill the Solutions
4. Evaluate the results.

You cannot learn until you start taking some corrective actions. Its not just on the water where things go wrong, its starts with the program and long before you head to the boat ramp to launch.

You can start with something as simple as your engine cut off switch and lanyard.

Are you sure you are using the correct engine cut off switch for your Rescue Water Craft?

INSPECT

You need a minimum of 6 engine cut of switches or 'kill switches' as some refer to them.

The generic slang is simply using the word 'lanyard' to shorten the sentence structure.

It is a lot to say 'grab your engine cut off switch lanyard', but that is the correct term.

So, go get them right now. I'll wait for you...................

REPLACE

Broken, cracked or damaged, its time to replace like this engine cut off switch

Welcome back!

How many do you have in front of you? One of three?

Here is a solid suggestion for you.

1. Emergency use for the RWC (in case of emergency only)
2. 1 for the Coxswain
3. 1 for the Crew Member
4. 1 on board for replacement in case of loss or damage underway.
5. Additional 2 spares back at the marine unit location to replace the damaged ones.

Okay, you you need at least 6 engine cut off switches honestly.

Well if you don't have replacements you may have to take your Rescue Water Craft out of service until new ones arrive. That could takes weeks on order during the peak season.

How do you inspect them?

Just like any other sensitive equipment:

1. Breaks, fractures, splits or cracks
2. Lanyard frayed or worn
3. Long term age (yeah replace old gear)
4. Make sure you are using the correct key to begin with!

Engine Cut Off Switches should be specific to the Make, Year and Production model of the Rescue Water Craft you use.

Inspect after every single use.
Inspect annually.

Remember, this is part of your minimum Rescue Water Craft carriage requirements and the single most important accessory you can have while underway.

Now that you have the engine cut off switch done, go do the line and inspect every other item in your Marine Unit RWC Shed!

Act Courageously Through Competence

Let Us Begin

Courage is a distinct action of human fortitude and opportunity. Competence is a scale of capability and commitment through scrutiny that enforces developmental aptitude.

Now, let's insert or most favorite Rescue Water Craft.

We have all the ingredients of success before us.

Decisions are Made Before Deployment

Actions can be either to variables:

1. Noble

2. Disaster

Which would you prefer? Sometimes a disaster prompts us to reach out for the noble humility of recognizing where our program is failing.

Then it gets easy!

What does training provide you? Either a waste of time, funding and resource or increase of capability, safety and prestige.

Prestige because you know you are on the right track and no longer fumbling the ball in the rescue lane. This was due to volition in leadership. Recognizing our pitfalls is the first step in striving for excellence through service.

Safety is a Behavior

I would like nothing better than for you to have the personal courage and conviction to evaluate where you are at the end of 2018.

1. What went wrong?
2. How did it happen?
3. What are the contributors of these failures?
4. Where can you make courageous changes?
5. Will you do it?

I want to encourage you to evaluate, assess and to be very hard on your recognition of alarm. Have your program assessed by an outside entity. Review your mishaps. Be critical in your assessments, don't say 'good job', say what can we do better?

Competence is Courage, it is a difficult transition from one to the other, because it is earned by effort.

I believe in you or you wouldn't be here spending your precious time reading this. You are going to do great!

Start the new year out with an honest assessment and your program will soar!
