There are 2 teams in today's water rescue arena:

1. Those who live water rescue methods as a way of being and are disciplined and take time to develop programs and knowledge.

2. Those who are poor imitators taking short cuts with disregard to the reality of safety and whom invite risk to cause harm.

ATTENTION ECONOMY SAFETY DEFICIT

How can we determine safety fact vs. reckless fiction in a digital world where people are desperate for attention?
It is more obvious now than ever our maritime heritage is at war with incompetent representations that are mirroring good works to undermine safety at sea and seamanship skills.

The mass manipulation of the reflection of social discourse is spreading unsafe boating and lifesaving practices and behaviors. The outlet forum is the internet we access on a variety of devices and we can be a significant part of the problem, or we are the sole ‘professional’ solution.

STRUCTURE OF REALITY

Digital discernment requires education and research. Let’s take a focused look at the ‘dumbing down’ of our maritime safety and security which follows in tack with just about every other subject on the net.

Being a Prudent Mariner is your responsibility. It takes effort, time and consistency on your behalf to debunk poor information.

You can triumph over pointing out what is wrong. There may be problems for this, but that should never stop you.

You need to risk what is right instead of endorsing with is wrong.

Discovering this reality after a horrible tragedy should never have these words attached to it:

We will learn from this accident.... because that never happens, its just repeated, and often.

LIVE NOT DIE

CONCEPTUAL SCHEMES OF LEARNING

Learning is leading. Your decision making is a process, its part of your courage, your creativity and subsequent action.

Stop relying on your conceptual schemes and thoughts, you have to put the element of the risk of nature and human action into the mix, this elevates your character as a Coxswain.

This is how you find the solutions to the problems you will encounter when underway on a small high risk craft in dynamic conditions.

PRUDENT MARINER

A good Rescue Water Craft instructor will not solve the problem that a student coxswain candidate needs to learn.

This causes great harm to their safety.

The student candidate cannot be disarmed in the face of natural chaos, they must be ready and strong to make the best decisions in a moment of peril or at speed when quick thoughts are inherent to personal safety.

Rescue situations are not a place to waste personnel, training time and funding. The investment should be grounded in the rise, not the fall of a political program that does not care about reputation and is willing to kill its own people.

STRUCTURE OF REALITY

If there is a collapse of a on-water rescue or Rescue Water Craft training course, it is an indication of internal corruption aka 'lack of prudent mariner skills'.

If an agency is conducting remedial program review (hopefully they do this annually) and they do not bring in an outside maritime subject matter expert of their inner circle, they are going to recreate the same nightmare if they have recurring mishaps or mechanical RWC failures.

It’s impossible for these groups or teams to succeed, they are afraid to experience the ethical success of public service in the maritime community.

Reality is our best measure of competence. Use the owners manual for the make, model and year of production of your Rescue Water Craft.

1. Make sure your Coxswains are certified annually or every three years.

2. Make sure your Rescue Water Craft instructors are certified annually, yes that is every year!

3. Make sure you review your program annually with an outside subject matter expert.

4. Make sure you have a maintenance program for all your equipment needs and an annual inspection.

Ensure that you are willing to discard an ideal rather than protect and endorse a flawed program that is not based in maritime law, rules, regulations and boating safety.

SEAMANSHIP SKILLS

THE THREE R’S
Ah, yes that well worn and abuse word 'risk'. Lots of measures have be slung at risk. Risk assessment, risk aversion, risk management, risk mitigation, risk levels. Life is risk the moment we are born, we have not make friends with the chaos to understand how to work with it.

Rescue Water Craft operations are high risk. Very high risk. The greatest risk is the mindset of those at the helm. What they do know and what they do not know. Let's step back for a moment and reflect on research concepts that can help us make peace with the devil we boat with.

Take a break here on these three R's:

1. Research
2. Reflect
3. Review

WE ARE BOATERS NOT LIFESAVERS

None of us can solve these unless you choose to go backwards and become weaker. We work in an unsafe environment, sometimes we have to retreat to move forward. Take apart our programs and restructure them or add to them. What we did last year will not work this year, everything is changing.

When you train you need a mentor, but ideally you need to be your own mentor. This will make your responsible and that is the social contract we need to endorse for our seamanship skills.

A subject matter expert aka an instructor will not solve the problem for you, they will allow you to discover the problem and deal with the realm of selection.

MENTORSHIP

This means your instructor(s) or mentor(s) have provided you with the terms and conditions of risk potential and the scheme of natures complexity.

They show you your delivery process and they focus on the ending. They allow you to learn and do not hold your capability hostage.
They must know the answers to the questions. They cannot guess and neither can you. You both need answers that lead to the functionality of high risk safety in a high risk environment so you don't become a statistic.

Question your training. Does it feel right? Does it line up with safety? Does it look unsafe? If it does, speak up and ask for an answer. Challenge the safety in training at all times. This is important for you and the instructors.

Protective training programs are destructive, they must be functional and modern. Otherwise you lose the knowledge potential which is replaced by a safe place nature will not respect and that creates and endorses a regressive program that will cause harm.

If your program is not able to confront danger and risk, shut it down. Start over. This is a great solution for a problem that can take people down a wormhole of wrong.

Confront your program and your program and personnel can grow. That is how we learn!

COURAGE

SEAMANSHIP SKILLS

Being a mariner is a thousands year old calling of boat wrecks, capsizing and drownings in our wake.

Seek a mentor or qualified boating safety instructor who realizes ‘that what is fatally flawed in training that they have already discovered’, they can help their students with the limit, until they reach the limit of their instructor.

Safety is a behavior, it is not a word or a phrase. It is an ACTION!

WE ARE BOATERS NOT LIFESAVERS

And hopefully both instructors and Coxswains have the courage to go beyond and continue to modernize the rescue mindset for Rescue Water Craft operations.

Do not be held hostage by a training manual.

Seek the creators of the discipline who are living it, as it if were their life.

We adapt through our training methods and demands because it is not complicated to comprehend the reasons why. Its the probability of patrol, response, search and recovery. It's also a part of that necessary maintenance territory we must endorse 85% of the time. 15% of your operations may be in the field on the water, the rest is program maintenance and recurring training.

We can scale our adaptation to the order of safety.

MARITIME SECURITY

Collectively through mutable experience levels and personnel discussions, we can scale our adaptation to the order of safety.

we can scale this up to the order of how the ocean moves, how the river flows, how the weather bears down in the negative.

How do you know the full extent of your capability?

You train, by repetitive exposure to methods in these elements that bring out your flaws and in isolated actions and exact pieces of evaluation and assessment brings you to a competency level once you reach your training limit.

Keep training, but make sure its effective and you know your equipment and the water. Do not become a potential victim.

Be courageous or open the door to become a statistic.

SACRIFICE

INFLUENTIAL

Some Rescue Water Craft instructors are privileged due to their own self conceived status and these positions may not be favored by the team who knows they don’t have the right to question the hierarchy.

What makes instructors mature is the necessity of the goal, not protecting a kingdom of wrong.

Service as an instructor is a responsibility in saving lives, its a significant burden to bear.

WE ARE BOATERS NOT LIFESAVERS

We are a power boating community, we are to protect, I say protect and defend ‘Seamanship Skills’.

We do not see hardly any Rescue Water Craft instructors worldwide who get this, they may have lifesaving or fire training, but this does not make them a mariner nor a boating safety instructor.

In fact, this may actually make them dangerous.

Training in the maritime community is not lifesaving. Its boating education. Lifesaving is only one function of boat operations.

This is where the fire service and lifesaving services fail our maritime community. They do not separate the two and therefore they undercut the need for seamanship skills. They are essentially killing our maritime community with this mindset.

Social media and news outlet videos do not lie.

In fact, we cringe when we see the potential of risk they endorse without comprehending its negligent or has great potential to cause harm both to their reputation and survivors.

BOATING SAFETY CULTURE

Law Enforcement and the military get it, why? Because they have Marine Units!

They are vested in our boating culture and community and boating law is scripted around the personification of their use for public service and protection.

Most of our trauma comes from fire and lifeguard services and its sadly expanding. If you are in the lifesaving or fire rescue community we implore you to join our boating community and learn about our seamanship skills.
Make them yours, but do not ignore this warning. Heed this advice now, today, this minute.

This is not about pride or ego, it is about service and competency. If I had a tooth that needed work done on it i would not go to an automotive technician, I would go to a dentist.

Lifesaving is not Rescue Water Craft Operations. It is only one facet of multi-use competencies required of a competent and qualified Rescue Water Craft Coxswain.

VISION IS INTENT

SOLUTION

When a program is failing it's time to sit down and review. Is there any corruption in the program design?

Admissions and training that is effective, reliable and purposeful is what the public deserves. The operational ideal needs to be destroyed in programs that are vetted on it, and not on reality.

There is plenty of negative evidence with departments and personnel names attached to the videos and photos to fill our 'what not to do' archives. These are not going to come off the internet and can be used against them in a court of law. They are essentially uploading the evidence against them.

Let’s focus on the positives and lend these Coxswains the proper audience as guardians against reckless and negligent predatory range.

EVIDENCE BASED

The evidence for that is the natural order of nature and its negative patterns of the following:

1. Weather
2. Floods
3. Disasters of various magnitudes
4. Human ignorance of adventure without preparation.

When exposed to something new in the training field we have drama as we call it, but it’s the complexity of danger and its friends. We must face this reality based monolith with courage and knowledge.

By incorporating effective training (emphasize effective) we learn how to adapt at every level of risk. This is a scale we drive and aim high for.

We train to be bigger than the chaos we are surrounded by.

Effective training is to assist and guide those to be exposed in a safe and leveled realm of the extent of our human capability in the risk we will respond to.

Its a complimentary need and oftentimes we are quite restricted.

SAFE

Safety is a determinable scale.

Risk and chaos that is determined in the different types of call outs and environments can be overwhelming. Especially if the training is not set to meet the response. Personnel are held back to their last level of attainable skills or poor instruction.
Make sure you are aiming high and remain unreasonable to some degree. Why? Nature is not concerned with your program, but you better be concerned about the power of nature itself. It's in control 100% of the time and we need to learn to work with it, not beneath its scope.

Sometimes we just don't go, or we close a program, or we upgrade our capability.

ZERO HERO

ZERO

There is no reason to learn from mishap lessons, but there is every reason to prevent them from occurring in the first place!

When mishap admission is confronted, terrible mishaps will stop.

Every Coxswain is responsible for everything that happens to themselves, their team and their operations. Every Coxswain is responsible for the recovery and transport of survivors.

This does not mean getting lucky or dismissing reckless operations underway.

DISHONORABLE MENTION

These operators allow the repeat of potential tragedy because they are willing to hold themselves in risk behaviors that are reckless, dangerous and negligent.

These operators will fight like mad to protect their mishaps and flaws and promote dangerous practices with a passion that would be better reserved for some humble admissions of wrong.

They are not a Hero, they are an Adversary. This makes them destructive.

THE CURE

Make sure first your program is not the problem. Assess your program functionality by having an accredited boating safety instructor with current credentials assess the program. After that its time to tackle personnel issues.

1. Remove them from operations.

2. Roll back to training and remedial action.

3. Document with accuracy the inconsistencies in operations.

4. Counsel with appropriate operational behaviors.

5. Enforce them.

Safety is a way of being. It is not a certificate. It is what that individual does with the knowledge that makes or breaks operations. Stay steady, stay true and remember that risk is not a word, its our friend challenging us to be responsible.

CHAOS BY VOLITION

CHAOS

The majority of Rescue Water Craft (RWC) operators are not RWC Coxswains. There are far too many whom are unsafe operators who believe they are doing the job appropriately, however their practices are negligent, it’s easy to identify.

Here are a few examples:

1. Hulls are not in the water (hulls leaving surface contact)
2. Operators are constantly jumping waves and wakes
3. Operators lack seamanship skills resulting in unstable craft
4. Operators use improper riding position and unsafe boating practices.

These operators oftentimes have the words 'RESCUE' on the side of their craft, but their actions are far from representing a water rescue mindset, more like a recreational riding PWC racing mindset.

They fail to understand what 'safe speed' underway means. It's starting to get a little bit better but not much as too many use unsafe practices from learning on video replay and ineffective training models. The good news, they can only get better! But they have to admit where their operations can cause harm first. Are they able to do this? We sure hope so!

HONORABLE MENTION

how can we help them? Being vocal about their potential for mishaps. Pointing out their errors and leading justifications of why. They may not like this, but they need to hear it before they damage their reputation or cause injury.

What else is going on? They do not understand how to maintain the boats from a maritime safety at sea mindset and have no supporting data to justify inspections.

To mediate between the two is the discovery that there is a safe place in training, and a dangerous place residing in the individual ego. Both are at war with one another as a dynamic catastrophe of limitation.

Let’s say it loudly.

Ego driven operators are weak, they are paralyzed by their own unknowns by not confronting danger with competency measures.

Through observation of videos online in social media posts, they hold onto their behaviors and the refusal to ask for help or critique.

ADVICE

They hide in the shadows rather than brave the flaws of learning. This is how a program collapses when this arbitrary fate of protecting corrupt behaviors is endorsed as ‘normal’.

When operators strive to protect the wrongs they endorse, they are not welcome in our maritime community. Seamanship skills were built upon the deaths of mariners, crude, hard and harrowing deaths.

Train like your life and others depend upon it, but first understand what that means.

As my mother used to tell me 'get over yourself'. Best advice I was ever given.

RESPONSIBLE PEOPLE ARE GREATLY ADMIRED

How can you increase functionality through service and reduce drama?

1. Research your program need, make a list and check the boxes
2. Source multiple outlets
3. Connect with the boating community and disconnect with lifesaving, you are a boater first!
4. Use your RWC Owner’s Manual
5. Secure an appropriate budget that tracks all program demands
6. Train with credited instructors. Ask them for their boating credentials.
7. Evaluate and track your in-service instructors, are they current in knowledgeable of boat operations?
8. Track your mishaps, do not repeat history

DEATH BECOMES YOU

WHO WANTS TO BE THE FIRST PERSON TO KILL A SURFER WITH THEIR PERSONAL WATER CRAFT?

It’s going to be someone, so how about you? How well prepared are you to prevent killing someone’s husband, wife, mother, father, brother or perhaps your best friend! Let’s call out the problems and the individuals and deal straight up with these recurring altercations and embarrassment caused to our community.

I read another deserving complaint from a surfing vs. PWC incident, one of a long line of them, our community needs to take responsibility for these actions and stand up against the liabilities. Not everyone deserves these negative labels and we will not tolerate disrespectful or ignorant operators.

Let’s help them so they can aim to higher boating capability and be safe while doing it, we all deserve that! It’s better than slinging spite, let’s get to admissions and corrections and hold one another accountable.

The internet does not lie regarding the complaints stacking up in the surfing world. Give the paddle surfers their voice and listen to what they are expressing. Surfing has always had frictional problems, but now it has boat problems.

Lineups are crowded, but there is never a justification for a PWC in the lineup unless it’s under permit from a special event or far away from others. Because it’s not just about you, paddlers are more vulnerable and you are a direct threat.

Yeah, of course it’s cool! Even though you can get more waves faster via a PWC pony ride, have more fun surfing with your friend, and by step paddling saving energy and increasing barrel potential, don’t do it around others.

NOBODY HAS THESE DISCUSSIONS

How about if you kill yourself, what will that mean to your family? What do you think the final seconds of your life will be worth as you slip away? Was it worth it or could you have stopped the flow? This is not a noble ending, you are worth so much more. Surely you are valuable and have things you want to do, so make your behaviors equal to your value.

Your absence will be horrible, a horrific tragedy for those you leave behind. Let that sink in. And you don’t want to go to prison for accidental homicide. Take inventory and start to look at your deepest truths of accountability.

This is not abstract, it’s a way of being and we all need strong mentors for the nature of our soul. You need to mediate your tragedy or your success.

The Kaleidoscope of athletic pursuit is not reliant on the action, but the preparation of its success.

That requirement is one of a burden of tremendous responsibility. It’s quadrupled when you are at the helm of a motorized vehicle. It’s either used for the pursuit of excellence or it’s a 1,000 lb. bomb waiting to blow.

Personal Water Craft are incredible power boats. They are modern in scope and have given us greater freedom and the ability to pursue dreams, careers, competitions, film and television, catch great fish, enjoy family gatherings, friendly club excursions, commune with nature, explore, experience incredible adventures and save lives, thousands of lives.

BENNIE AND THE JETS
That is the benefit of owning or operating a PWC, the glory of freedom. The problem with Personal Water Craft is people. It begins with the registered owners who are legally responsible for everything that happens with that craft and whom they bring on-board or loan their boat to.

The rebate check can be the registered owners friends and family members the owner allows to operate. There is nothing wrong with a PWC. The risk and danger is the decisions a human puts into motion while operating a PWC.

There are too many poor examples not to have noticed this by the year 2019. Personal Water Craft came into the market place as we know them back in 1974. They have progressed and become popular modern power boats to own. They provide us with opportunity. The internet offers you the quickest way to intelligent operations, there are literally no more excuses available for anyone to hide behind.

Step Off Surfing/bodyboarding, Tow surfing, Tow Foiling, Caddy Rides, new ways to get more waves or to use as a film platform for personal use or professional captures. If used for the purpose of lifesaving, proper qualification training and scrutiny of Coxswain candidates and equipment is required if not necessary.

It’s a true vessel of our times; it’s modern, fast, and aggressive and compliments our competitive nature. But that needs to be harnessed and not unleashed recklessly.

If this describes you, where do you begin? You back up. Go back to your foundation. Review your basic boating course you had to take and assess your responsible behaviors. Once you master that you move forward to listing all the potential harm you can cause. Wear your lifejacket, use your engine cut off switch properly, the basics.

Don’t be an incompetent operator that is easy fodder for the twitter mobs. And if you do, you deserve it.

You decide, you can become tyrannical in your pursuits and restrict your possibilities and you can damage community. When you cut corners, you increase the associated costs. You don’t want to lose that chance and squander the opportunity to be great because you may not get it back again.

BOATING IS EXPENSIVE

If you are not prepared to be economically realistic with PWC ownership don’t get one, resist, avoid, walk away and don’t succumb to mediocrity. Pay up properly and understand the investment ratio to hours of use. The stakes are too high. What are some of the items you need?
1. Payment of the craft and registration fees
2. Boaters insurance, life insurance (make your will while you are at it)
3. Hourly maintenance schedule and inspection log book
4. Boating Education & recurring education
5. Ensure anyone who comes on board your PWC has training to protect your reputation, livlihood and insurance
6. Spare parts, mechanic fees, diagnostic checks
7. Trailer-maintenance, tires, axles, electrical, tie downs, registration fees (tow vehicle/hitch)
8. Personal Protective Equipment: Lifejacket(s), wetsuit, booties, gloves, eye protection
9. Communication systems: Radio, Whistle, GPS, trackers
10. Government required onboard safety equipment properly packed, waterproofed and stowed
11. Fuel and fluids (silicone, marine grease, wash down, cleaning agents)
12. Towable Aquaplane Devices (TAD) accessories (foils, rescue boards, towlines, inflatables)

Start with death and go backwards. Make admissions, visualize accidents you have read about and place your name in the storyline: ‘Jet Skier dies, body missing, wasn’t wearing a lifejacket, family grieves, search continues’

Here is what a lot of people do to evade responsibility, until it’s too late:

• I can kill somebody and it will be an accident (but not really)
• I can kill myself and my family and friends will deal with the ramifications of my choices
• I can destroy the Personal Water Craft and try to claim insurance on it when I was in a ‘no-go’ zone, so I will lie about the damages and location
• I can kill one of my friends or somebody I didn’t know, maybe more than one person, but I will meet their family in court after my arrest and impound of my Personal Water Craft and face my family.
• Didn’t file a float plan, sunk my PWC, expect a ride from rescue services, didn’t learn my lesson
• I can seriously injure myself or others so that I cannot go to work and pay my bills. I may need therapy or rehabilitation and I don’t have the right medical policy to cover that. Maybe a friend will set up a GoFundMe and slightly lie about why I need the money, not how I created the situation and I knew better.
• Keep going, you can imagine all the potential items that can go wrong by your own volition.

COXSWAIN-OWNER PERSONAL WATER CRAFT SURFZONE LIABILITY
This is something you need to attend to and it is worthwhile for not just you but everyone in the lineup. Don’t be blind in your selective situations. Remember what is behind everything you select, every action, every turn and decision. Don’t bring on suffering because it is a tremendous burden and nobody deserves that potential risk.

Surfers are not boaters. Not when they are surfing. Most surfers who use a PWC are incompetent when it comes to seamanship skills. If they had them the majority disregard using them on a PWC. They claim training but when challenged their training qualification is worthless. So what is the point of wasting time? Make it right as rain.

They easily become reckless and negligent in their operations incremental over time, sometimes due to peer pressure and have a finite disregard for the safety of others. It’s because they have had poor mentors or they have imitated poorly themselves. Or they simply disregard their training and boating safety because their ego is unbalanced on a dangerous precipice. Good mentors would call them out and set them straight ASAP!

A few get it and are respectful and we don’t hear about them, but the noise usually comes at the expensive of a catastrophic failure. It’s not cool to gawk at a mishap online, and no they are not heroes for surviving one. They don’t have to be in the surfzone either, but closer to shore they become more noticeable. Cameras don’t lie.

Think about how a PWC operator in the surf line doesn’t realize that others in the lineup are insignificant. This brings a moral burden of expedient pleasure of liberty for them to pursue their short term operational goal at the expensive of delusional weakness that others cannot shrug off. It’s an easy pathway to disregard others, and it’s dangerous. And the mob of reason is growing. PWC surfers/safety/tow-in folks need to sit down and listen.

Their migratory damage has already ruined great towsurfing areas around the world that are now off limits. Ask me how I know? Let’s talk about South Africa and Mavericks, and Australia where they pump up justifications by their own actions for opposition to ban them by their lofty carnage video posts and hashtags. Everyone is waiting for them to kill someone so they can pressure the authorities to ban them forever and spew hate. Who will it be?

RESPONSIBLE PEOPLE ARE GREATLY ADMIRED

Responsible people aim high, they don’t embrace the lowest denominator, they don’t jump off a cliff, they climb it. They are platinum, not copper. Everyone else is a distraction and a potential problem waiting to burden others.

Responsible people do their homework, they work hard, they are professional and not fragmented, and they comprehend risk and don’t want to hurt anyone. They want to succeed and are not afraid of it. They want to protect their sponsors and those they work with. They care about their family and friends.

They are not lazy, they are meaningful people with purpose. They stand out because there is something good in them fundamentally and they adhere to considerate behaviors so they don’t get sucked down by imposters.

Those who disrespect our PWC boating culture are migratory thieves. They do not architect the future for our community, they destroy opportunity. It happens in the recreational PWC community and we see it more often in the surfing community because they love the camera and media attention. Some of this is due to sponsorships or hopes of, and they too will sell out for silly mishap likes. Mutable problems of wrong that hold progress hostage.

These imitators are not the center of the surfing world, they are casting the future potential of dangerous boating behaviors into the lineup. It’s like choosing between good and evil and that is entirely on them. This is an ultimate responsibility of your or their operational safety and everyone in a 300’ foot radius you could impact in 100 different ways, and it needs to be made right. This is not about short term pleasure or ego, or the primary call of adventure that is so terribly seductive, it’s the protection of the temptation to resist harming others.

POWER IS KNOWLEDGE IS FUNCTION IS THIRST

See people in the lineup? A boat dead head, a fishing boat under tow, a SUP or kiter? Give wide berth, slow down, alter course, resist being you and become a prudent mariner. Burns to read this doesn’t it? It will burn red hot if it’s true and sting like a mo’fucker, because the conscious of those guilty will not deny our flaws. If the surf community is pissed off, listen to them and heed their advice. Drive away and find another wave, private but be prepared for your safety and those around you.

The wave cannot be blamed. The wave did not cause loss of control of the PWC, you did. You put the PWC there, you made the decision to position it, and you need to be competent enough to manage that choice. Have you even read the Owner’s Manual yet? If not, write to me and I will send you one. Solutions are easy.

Have you considered the audience? Take a close look at a lineup all the way to the sandy shore of the nearshore drift. Do you have a right to take away their opportunity and elevate yours? Can you illustrate what their thoughts and fears may be observing you’re positioning? You need to do this.

You need to be them and they need to be you. If it doesn’t add up you are in the wrong place and have no business being there.
Is it illegal? Then you deserve to lose your boater license, be rolled back to training and having your vessel parked until you correct your safety behaviors, while you pay any necessary fines. It’s a privilege to operate a boat, don’t blow it because you are impulsive!

THE POINTS WHERE THINGS GO WRONG
• Close proximity to surfers or swimmers
• Speed of PWC
• Reckless negligent operation of a motorized vessel
• Not wearing an approved lifejacket
• Not using the Engine Cut Of Switch properly
• Not maintain the vessel (not seaworthy)
• Operating in unsafe conditions or overloading your vessel
• Not having a tow line that is functional
• Not knowing how to right a capsize Personal Water Craft
• Violation of any Local, State, Federal, Province, Prefecture, Sanctuary, laws, rules or regulations
• Swell, wave height, water depth, shoreline, tidal concerns
• Time of day
• Type of PWC being used-weight displacement, not to be operated in surf over 6.5’
• How many persons on board (POB)
• Directional maneuvering of the PWC
• Coxswain competency training for surf operations
• Coxswain PWC license/boater ID card
• PWC Insurance, registered owner liability
• Required government safety equipment to be carried on board (inspected-minimum carriage)
• Approved, properly sized and fitted lifejacket (PFD) for all persons on board (POB)

HOW MUCH IS YOUR REPUTATION WORTH?
For some people, it’s not even worth the price of a Lifejacket. Their life is as cheap as $75.00 USD. I can get a really nice dinner for that! But when you need it, you cannot afford it because it’s surfer and lifeguards have this chronic fear of being able to duck dive a wave. It’s a very powerful jet driven boat, it’s not a surfboard.

If you have fear that you are going to lose the boat in the surf, there is a reason why you are afraid, and you will lose your boat. That means you have no business being there and don’t know what you are doing with it. The irony is how big wave surfers cling to these inflatable devices but their PWC partners are afraid to wear a lifejacket…makes no sense at all. Argument is over.

You are a boater first, everything else when you are at the helm is inconsequential in a court of law. How will you present yourself to a judge and jury if called into court, what defense will you be able to present?

How about changing the conversation? Turn it all around, turn up the volume. Start hanging out with competent PWC people who care and know what they are doing, associate yourself with knowledge instead of distractions that do not want you to succeed.
Here is what you can respect, and what you can do to guide your pursuits by discipline that will allow you to achieve measurable success:

1. GPS Tracking device properly charged and tethered to Coxswain
2. Marine VHF radio properly tethered to Lifejacket of Coxswain
3. Water Whistle (leash) on Lifejacket of Coxswain
4. File a Float Plan
5. Never go out alone, use the buddy system
6. Train effectively, don’t burn gas, train with purpose
7. Observe the weather and water reports (lightning is a no-go) while underway
8. Read the Owner’s Manual, know how to do field repairs on the water and prepare your craft for launch
9. Carry proper tools and emergency supplies
10. Go over a safety plan in case things go bad or you end up helping others or need assistance yourself
11. Introduce yourself to the local authorities. Ask them to inspect your boat and give you advice
12. Know the area seasonally and study the local nautical charts, map out your timeframes and distance
13. Start logging your training and vessel maintenance, become a prudent mariner

THE ENDING
I learned from my PWC mistakes when I began in 1979, I know this business and human behavior. I have over 37,000 hours of training alone. I own that and I am still alive because I paid attention. Our shortcomings, our struggles are real. Strong words shared here because the truth of these matters will awaken a person who needs correction and determine that your/their awareness will no longer permit you/them to remain asleep.

Trust me, that mishap that death or that injury is coming like a freight train on your wrong way track and you won’t be able to stop it, but you can today.

If your friends cared about you and much as I do in this moment, you would not be reading my advice, getting pissed off and angry, wanting to call me some crappy name, because your real friends would have squared you away immediately and pointed you in the right direction. But they didn’t.

You can redeem yourself individually when you are no longer overwhelmed with the risk and embrace the power of scale you can incorporate in your operational efficiency. Imagine what responsibility will add to your ability to solve problems that you need.

You won’t have to avoid the short term at the expense of the long term gain, its happiness in your pursuits that gives you greater purpose and kills off the cynical binge of disaster.

Possibly I am old enough to be your mother or your grandmother, and there is great wisdom in that. I care about your reputation and your life and you better listen because you are not replaceable.

Somebody has to speak to you about your true value and care enough to say the reasons why you don’t want these mistakes. You cannot afford to screw up your life. The price is too high for you to bear, it’s not a place you want to put yourself in. This is a reason to become better than what you were doing, offer it to yourself and increase your value.

Now start caring about yourself properly. And remember; I am you and you are me.
